Linguists have divided Chinese into eight to ten main language groups with each group having several sub-dialects.

Mandarin
Spoken by over 1 billion native speakers globally, Mandarin is by far the most used language in the world today.
Standard Chinese
Standard Chinese (also known as common speech) is one of Mandarin’s many dialects and is the official language of China and Taiwan.
Standard Chinese is also one of four languages spoken in Singapore and one of the six languages used in the UN and is taught in schools as well as being predominantly used in business.
Cantonese (Yue)
A well-known variant of Chinese with approximately 80 million speakers in China alone.
Some of the key differences of Cantonese compared with Mandarin include its nine tones and much longer vowel length.

Gan, Hakka, Min, Wu (Shanghainese), Xiang (Hunanese)
